Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council to consider £1.8m expansion of Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council is set to discuss plans to expand Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre in Christchurch with a proposed investment of £1.8 million.

The project would create two new purpose-built studios, aimed at improving access to fitness and leisure activities for local residents.

Councillors are scheduled to review the proposals at the council’s Cabinet meeting on 14 January. Subject to planning approval, work on the extension would be expected to finish by July 2027. The new studios are designed to allow a wider variety of classes and activities, supporting both physical and mental wellbeing and providing a space for rehabilitation and early intervention programmes.

The expansion is intended to make the leisure centre more accessible for people of all ages and abilities. It would allow for a more diverse timetable, including inclusive sessions for residents with special educational needs and programmes tailored to different cultural communities. By increasing the capacity of Two Riversmeet, the council hopes to strengthen the centre’s role as a community hub, helping people connect through shared activities while also boosting membership and generating income that can be reinvested in services.

Councillor Richard Herrett, Portfolio Holder for Destination, Leisure and Commercial Operations at BCP Council, said “Two Riversmeet is already a fantastic example of how locally managed services meet community needs – helping connect people and encouraging active, healthy lifestyles. These proposals would allow us to go even further and are a significant investment in Christchurch and the health and happiness of our residents.

“By creating modern, accessible spaces for fitness and leisure we’ll be able to offer more choice and flexibility for residents of all ages and abilities.”

The council describes the project as a long-term investment in the health and wellbeing of Christchurch residents, ensuring that leisure facilities remain inclusive, welcoming, and fit for future generations.
