Dorset tip booking system delayed to early 2026 to reduce congestion

Dorset Council has delayed the launch of a booking system at four household recycling centres until “early 2026”. The scheme, covering Dorchester, Wimborne, Shaftesbury, and Sherborne, aims to reduce congestion and prevent misuse by commercial users and residents from outside the county.

The system was originally due to start in 2025, but the council said extra time was needed to ensure it runs smoothly. Residents will be able to book free of charge online or by phone, while non-Dorset users will be required to pay a fee. Further details on the start date and booking process will be released later.

Place services councillor Jon Andrews said: “We’re taking a little extra time to make sure the system works smoothly for everyone. This is about delivering a better experience for residents and ensuring the service remains fair, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.”

The council initially planned to introduce the booking system at all ten sites, but following public backlash it reduced the rollout to four locations. Alternative measures will be explored to address commercial misuse at Bridport, Swanage, Weymouth, Portland, Wareham, and Blandford. Around 20% of waste at Shaftesbury and Sherborne currently comes from outside the county, with costs covered by council taxpayers. Residents from neighbouring Somerset and Wiltshire will still be able to access the sites but must pay the entry fee.
