Manchester City 0-1 Brighton: Ayari and Verbruggen Inspire Historic Seagulls Victory

Brighton secured a landmark 1-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, with Yasin Ayari’s early strike and an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen delivering the club’s first-ever away win against the Premier League side.

The result handed City their second consecutive league defeat under Enzo Maresca, while Brighton moved to within two points of their opponents after producing a disciplined performance to protect their advantage.

The decisive moment arrived in the 11th minute when Brighton took advantage of a defensive mistake. Lewis Dunk started the move with a long diagonal pass towards Diego Gómez, who delivered the ball across the penalty area. Maxim De Cuyper helped direct it into Ayari’s path, allowing the Swedish midfielder to finish from close range and put the visitors ahead.

City responded by taking control of possession and applying pressure, but struggled to convert their territorial advantage into clear-cut chances. Iliman Ndiaye came close with a header from Elliot Anderson’s delivery, while Erling Haaland was denied by Brighton’s defensive organisation.

The visitors had an opportunity to double their lead shortly after the interval when De Cuyper found space inside the penalty area, but his effort flew over the crossbar. That miss left Brighton facing a difficult second half as City increased their attacking intensity.

Ndiaye struck the crossbar with a powerful effort, while Matheus Nunes was denied by Verbruggen after being played through by substitute Rayan Cherki. The Dutch goalkeeper continued to frustrate the hosts, making seven saves in total, including a crucial late stop to keep out Jérémy Doku.

Nico O’Reilly also missed an important opportunity in the closing stages, sending his header wide as City desperately searched for an equaliser. Brighton remained organised under pressure and held on to secure a memorable result.

The statistics highlighted City’s attacking dominance but also Brighton’s defensive resilience. City registered 21 shots, with six on target, compared with Brighton’s seven attempts and three efforts on target. The hosts recorded 1.92 expected goals, while the visitors finished with 1.00. Brighton also secured their sixth clean sheet of the Premier League campaign, the highest total in the division at that stage.

The result was historic for the visitors. Brighton had failed to win in their previous 17 away meetings with City across all competitions, recording five draws and 12 defeats. Their victory at the Etihad finally ended that sequence.

It also brought an end to City’s 24-match Premier League scoring streak. Maresca’s side had previously found the net in every league match during that run, but Brighton’s defensive performance prevented them from extending it.

Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler was delighted with the collective effort and said his players had demonstrated the belief required to win at one of the most difficult grounds in English football.

“It means a lot for the team and for the club.”

Hürzeler explained that his side had been prepared for a demanding afternoon against a team that would dominate possession and force them to defend for long periods.

“I said before the game it’s about belief, it’s about having the confidence to come here and win this game, and I think my players suffered but they stuck together.”

The Brighton manager admitted that his team had been fortunate at certain moments but insisted their determination and collective commitment had played a decisive role in the result. He also praised the way his players continued to look for a second goal after taking the lead, particularly early in the second half.

Hürzeler placed particular emphasis on the defensive work that secured the victory, highlighting the importance of players taking responsibility for one another.

“There’s an old phrase – defence wins you battles and wins you championships. Of course, we’re not speaking about the championship, but especially today we needed to have this defensive mindset.”

He also paid tribute to the 3,044 Brighton supporters who travelled to Manchester for the second time in four days. Having been unable to give them a victory in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup encounter, the manager said it was important to reward their backing and strengthen the connection between the team and its supporters.

Verbruggen, whose seven saves proved crucial to keeping City scoreless, was equally quick to share the credit with his team-mates rather than focus on his own contribution.

“It was a good game from all of us. I’m happy to help the team and make some important saves, but I wasn’t the only one.”

The goalkeeper also highlighted the defensive contributions made in front of him, explaining that several team-mates had produced important blocks to prevent City from scoring.

“I think there were four or five shots blocked in an amazing way as well. It was a joint effort from everyone. We celebrate and go again.”

For Maresca, the defeat was another frustrating afternoon in which his side created opportunities but failed to find the net. The City manager admitted that individual mistakes were continuing to cost his team points and called for improvements at the back.

“We created enough to get some points but we didn’t score. We did enough to deserve something.”

He was particularly concerned by the nature of the goal conceded, adding:

“We are conceding silly goals; we can avoid that.”

Maresca also acknowledged that his players needed to analyse their recent performances, understand where they were going wrong and respond quickly rather than allow the consecutive defeats to affect their confidence.

The result was especially satisfying for Brighton after their midweek disappointment at the same stadium. Four days earlier, they had been eliminated from the Carabao Cup by City on penalties after a 2-2 draw. The Seagulls had opted to remain in the Manchester area following that match, and Hürzeler later spoke about the importance of using the time together positively before returning to the Etihad.

This time, his players turned their performance into a historic away victory, demonstrating the defensive discipline and belief required to compete with the league’s leading teams.

Brighton moved to 19 points after nine matches, leaving them two behind City, who remained on 21 points. The Seagulls had now won five of their previous six Premier League matches, keeping clean sheets in all five victories.

For Brighton, the result represented another significant step forward under Hürzeler. For City, the immediate priority will be to rediscover their scoring touch and address the defensive mistakes that have contributed to consecutive league defeats.
