Manchester United’s Freefall Deepens After Bournemouth Humble Carrick’s Side

Manchester United’s difficult run continued with a damaging 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, as Michael Carrick’s side were punished for defensive errors and struggled to turn possession into meaningful attacking pressure.

The visitors took control with two goals in the space of five minutes before half-time. Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute, finishing at the far post after Justin Kluivert’s free-kick caused problems in the United penalty area. Marcus Tavernier doubled Bournemouth’s advantage five minutes later, capitalising on Leny Yoro’s slip to score from close range.

United attempted to respond after the break, but Bournemouth continued to threaten on the counter-attack. Evanilson settled the contest in the 71st minute, taking advantage of the difficult, windy conditions to get past Senne Lammens and finish from a tight angle.

The result extended United’s winless run to eight matches and increased the pressure on Carrick, whose team again struggled to show the consistency and defensive organisation required at this level.

United had more of the ball and registered 17 shots, compared with Bournemouth’s 10, but the visitors were more effective in front of goal. Bournemouth recorded four shots on target to United’s five, while their expected goals figure of 2.18 was considerably higher than United’s 1.18, reflecting the quality of the chances they created.

Carrick accepted responsibility for the result when asked about the pressure surrounding his position.

“I take the responsibility, of course.”

The United head coach also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the club’s immediate future, saying:

“I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything in particular to be honest, I’m carrying on as normal.”

Defensive concerns were also evident in Harry Maguire’s post-match assessment. The defender highlighted the team’s failure to deal with a basic set-piece situation, which proved decisive in the build-up to Bournemouth’s opener.

“We don’t defend a basic set play.”

Maguire added:

“We’ve got to do more, we’ve got to improve more.”

His comments reflected the frustration of a United side that conceded twice before half-time and never found a way back into the contest.

Bournemouth, by contrast, delivered a composed and disciplined performance. The result marked another 3-0 victory at Old Trafford, extending a remarkable sequence of wins by the same scoreline on their recent visits to the ground. Evanilson’s goal also continued his strong scoring form, taking his tally to four goals in five matches.

Manager Marco Rose praised his players for taking the game to United rather than sitting back and relying solely on counter-attacks.

“We wanted to be front-footed. We wanted to be brave and we played brave.”

Rose was pleased with the way his team expressed themselves, adding:

“We have good players and we showed it. We were just Bournemouth today.”

The Bournemouth manager also expressed sympathy for Carrick amid the scrutiny facing his opposite number, emphasising the human side of the pressure experienced by coaches.

“I feel a lot of empathy for my colleagues, for everyone. People must understand that we are just humans trying to do our job in the best possible way.”

Rose’s comments offered a measured response to the attention surrounding United, while underlining that Bournemouth’s victory was built on their own performance. The Cherries have now recorded back-to-back wins and four consecutive victories across all competitions, carrying momentum forward after an impressive spell of results.

For United, the questions are becoming harder to avoid. Their possession and shot count offered little comfort against a Bournemouth side that defended with discipline and made the most of its opportunities. Carrick and his players must now find answers quickly if they are to halt the slide and restore confidence at Old Trafford.
