Meachers Global Logistics is a firm committed to responsible supply chain management and reducing unnecessary waste, so after identifying a surplus of organic baby food products in their warehouse that required disposal recently, they didn’t send the items to landfill, but instead made a more sustainable plan.
They arranged for them to be donated to The Big Difference, a Southampton-based food redistribution charity dedicated to reducing waste and supporting those facing food insecurity.
The Big Difference began in March 2020, during the first COVID-19 lockdown, as an extension of Above Bar Church’s Big Breakfast initiative, and since has partnered with over 100 community groups, charities, schools, and places of worship across the region.
To date, it has redistributed more than £4.5 million worth of surplus food, about 40 tonnes of stock monthly, equivalent to approximately 95,000 meals. The products include 5kg bags of organic baby pasta, such as macaroni and shells, and 25kg bags of organic oat flour. All the items are in excellent condition with good best before dates, and by redirecting these goods, we aim to ensure they are put to meaningful use.
Emma Newman, Warehouse Manager at Meachers Global Logistics, said: “We’re always looking for practical ways to reduce waste and make a positive impact. Donating these products means they can benefit families rather than being discarded, which is a far better outcome for everyone involved.
