INVICTUS Shortlisting for Spaceport Cornwall Strengthens UK Aerospace Ambitions

Spaceport Cornwall has emerged as a leading contender in one of Europe’s most advanced aerospace programmes after being shortlisted by the European Space Agency for the pioneering INVICTUS hypersonic flight test platform. The INVICTUS shortlisting for Spaceport Cornwall signals a growing recognition of the UK’s ability to support high end flight development.

INVICTUS aims to create a European hypersonic flight test capability that bridges the gap between ground research and full scale demonstrations. It is set to drive innovation in reusable launch systems, high speed flight and next generation aerospace technologies for civil, commercial and defence applications. The INVICTUS shortlisting for Spaceport Cornwall is therefore a significant vote of confidence in the site’s readiness and strategic value.

To strengthen its case, Spaceport Cornwall worked with Frazer Nash Consultancy to develop the UK’s operational concept for hosting INVICTUS testing. Their partnership formed an important part of the evaluation process and helped demonstrate the site’s operational maturity.

Tony Forsythe, head of space technology at the UK Space Agency, stated plainly why the decision matters. He said: “The shortlisting of Spaceport Cornwall and Machrihanish demonstrates the UK’s infrastructure and expertise in advancing cutting edge aerospace technologies. INVICTUS represents exactly the kind of ambitious, collaborative programme that could cement the UK’s position as a European leader in space innovation.” He added that by pushing forward technologies in reusable spaceplanes and hypersonic flight, the UK is “potentially not only opening new frontiers for space access but also creating high value jobs, driving regional growth, and developing skills that will benefit the UK for generations to come.” His words underline why the INVICTUS shortlisting for Spaceport Cornwall is seen as a moment of national importance.

Ross Hulbert, head of engagement at Spaceport Cornwall, echoed this sense of opportunity. He said: “Being shortlisted for INVICTUS is a significant moment for Spaceport Cornwall and underscores our commitment to advancing the UK’s future flight and hypersonic ambitions. Our world class facilities, operational versatility, and strategic position within both civilian and military aviation infrastructures place us in a leading role to support this transformational European programme.” His comments highlight how the INVICTUS shortlisting for Spaceport Cornwall aligns with long term ambitions already underway at the site.

If chosen, Spaceport Cornwall would host INVICTUS operations, integration campaigns and flight activities. This would add to its expanding involvement in national capability development, including its selection for the Ministry of Defence’s Hypersonic Technologies and Capability Development Framework. The INVICTUS shortlisting for Spaceport Cornwall therefore represents both continuity and expansion in its growing aerospace role.
