Swansea City remain top of the Championship after grinding out a goalless draw at home to Welsh rivals Wrexham.
The dour affair kept up Swansea’s unbeaten start and they have an enviable defensive record too, with just one goal shipped across five games. Vitor Matos’ side lead the way on 11 points.
Elsewhere in the second tier, Middlesbrough maintained their good start as they sealed a narrow 1-0 win away at QPR as Will Lankshear’s fine scoring run continued. The former Spurs striker notched his seventh goal of the season at Loftus Road.
At the other end of the table, Burnley’s wretched start to the campaign continued as they fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Bristol City. The Clarets, still searching for their first win, led just before the hour mark through Aaron Ramsey but the visitors scored twice in the final ten minutes to stun Turf Moor.
Sunday saw an entertaining Midlands derby unfold between Birmingham and Wolves, who played out a 2-2 draw. Wolves twice led but the Blues battled back for a share of the spoils with a farcical own goal from Jackson Tchatchoua levelling the game up for a second time. That maintained Birmingham’s unbeaten league record, albeit four of their five games have ended in stalemates.
Elsewhere, Saturday saw big home wins for a clutch of sides. Millwall were 4-0 victors against Bolton, Stoke hammered Charlton by the same scoreline and West Ham made it back-to-back wins with a 3-0 home success over Derby.
There were also victories for Preston, Portsmouth, West Brom and Norwich whilst Lincoln and Southampton played out a 1-1 draw.
In League One, Sheffield Wednesday are top thanks to a fourth win from five games. The Owls won 2-1 at Peterborough with Yan Valery’s late header sealing the points. Just behind them are fellow Yorkshire side Huddersfield, who had to make do with a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw at home to Notts County.
Stockport hammered Wigan 4-0 to move up to third, with Bradford fourth after a slender 1-0 success over Mansfield.
Leicester City boss Russell Martin continues to come under huge pressure after watching his side get thumped 4-0 by Oxford United. The Foxes, big favourites with the bookmakers to go straight back up to the Championship, have just five points from as many games.
There was a goal-drenched contest at Wycombe, as they played out a pulsating 3-3 draw against MK Dons. The hosts were 2-0 up at the break but then collapsed as they shipped three times in the space of ten, second half minutes to trail. But new Wanderers forward Jayden Wareham saved the day as he pinched a point late on.
Those two sides remain winless as do Doncaster, who fell to a 3-2 home reverse to Plymouth Argyle. Elsewhere, Stevenage romped to a 5-1 win at Barnsley and Reading saw off Blackpool 3-1. There were draws between Burton and Cambridge (2-2) and Luton and Leyton Orient (1-1).
In League Two, Bristol Rovers stay top after their 1-0 home win over Rotherham as Steve Evans won against his old employers.
Just behind them are Swindon, who beat Colchester 3-1 thanks to an inspired performance from Aaron Drinan who sealed a hat-trick. There are a clutch of teams just below the Robins who are unbeaten, with two wins and three draws on the board. One of those, Barnet, played out an enthralling 3-3 draw at Chesterfield. The Bees led three times only to be pulled back on each occasion by the hosts.
Saturday also saw home wins for Fleetwood, Salford, Accrington Stanley, Northampton and Tranmere. Gillingham were the only away victors, battering Rochdale 4-1.
There were three other stalemates, with Cheltenham and Grimsby drawing 2-2, Crewe and York ending 1-1 and Exeter and Walsall finishing goalless.
