More than 35 years after its debut, the Mazda MX-5 continues to embody Mazda’s enduring philosophy of pure driving enjoyment. As the world’s best-selling roadster with more than 1.2 million units sold worldwide, the 2027 Mazda MX-5 arrives in the UK in January with carefully crafted refinements to enhance its timeless Jinba Ittai – car and driver as one ethos.
With an eight-model line-up, the 2027 Mazda MX-5 will feature Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Homura Plus grades – available across both Roadster and RF body styles. The 2027 Mazda MX-5 will be sold exclusively with the 136ps 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine and will also see the introduction of a new Mazda paint colour: Zinc Green Metallic – a modern green shade that combines toughness and refinement.
The 184ps 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine was dropped from European markets in 2024 due to changing emissions regulations, however due to different derogation timings in the UK it was able to continue with an extended sales period in the UK, this period has now ended and the 2.0-litre Mazda MX-5 will not carry over into the 2027 Mazda MX-5 model year.
Commenting on the updates to the Mazda MX-5, Mazda UK Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said: “we have sufficient stock of 2.0-litre models to meet anticipated customer demand until around January, when the 2027 Mazda MX-5 will arrive in UK dealerships. While it’s a shame that changing legislation means we can no longer sell the 2.0-litre in the UK, the 1.5-litre engine remains at the heart of the MX-5. The current-generation MX-5 was originally developed around this engine, with its lightweight, responsive and accessible performance perfectly reflecting Jinba Ittai. The 1.5-litre ensures customers can continue to enjoy the lightweight, engaging and fun to drive experience that has defined the Mazda MX-5 for more than 35 years and continues to win awards as one of the best driving cars on the road today”.
With a small increase in power and torque, the updated 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine now has 136ps and 155Nm of torque and will make its debut on the 2027 Mazda MX-5. Additionally, CO2 emissions are reduced to 139g/km, while improvements to the engine’s acoustics reinforce the MX-5’s driving engagement.
The updated car also sees the introduction of Homura and Homura Plus grades to the 1.5-litre engine. These new models are marked out by 16-inch metallic black RAYS alloy wheels, red Brembo front brakes, red rear brake calipers and black mirrors, while inside Recaro seats, plus black air vent surrounds and air conditioning controls bring a sporty look to the cabin. Dynamically the Homura and Homura Plus also see the introduction of Bilstein dampers and front strut brace to the 1.5-litre for the first time reinforcing the MX-5’s driver focus and handling dexterity.
Across all models, the 2027 Mazda MX-5 sees the introduction of a new colour – Zinc Green Metallic, this new colour is a modern green that harmonises seamlessly with both natural landscapes and urban settings. To date Mazda has offered approximately 80 shades of green throughout the firm’s history. Zinc Green Metallic takes its inspiration from the colour and texture of zinc chromate primer, an undercoat used to enhance the durability of industrial products. It translates the rational functional beauty into a sense of strength expressed through colour and texture.
Safety equipment has also been enhanced on the 2027 Mazda MX-5 with Driver Monitoring now standard across all grades, while Homura Plus gains Adaptive LED Headlights, Smart Brake Support Rear, Rear Crossing Alert, Vehicle Exit Warning and rear-view camera.
While full range pricing for the 2027 Mazda MX-5 will be announced later this year, now more than ever, the Mazda MX-5 sits in a class of its own – it’s one of only three sub £30,000 convertibles on sale in the UK and the only one of this trio that’s a sports car. It’s also one of only three mainstream roadsters for sale for under £50,000 in the UK and one of only two sub £30,000 rear-wheel cars on sale with a combustion engine. Additionally, the MX-5’s famed six-speed gearbox continues to be a bastion of manual gearbox engagement in an age when automatics are becoming ever more ubiquitous.
The 2027 Mazda MX-5 will arrive in UK showrooms in January, allowing this multi award-winning sports car to continue more than 35 years of success and maintain its place in the heart of UK car enthusiasts as the default choice for an affordable driver’s car.
