Leaders at two Surrey schools have expressed delight after being recognised among the best in the region. Nonsuch High School for Girls was named state secondary school of the year in the South East, while South Farnham School received a highly-commended accolade as primary school of the year for 2026 in a Sunday Times listing.
Alexis Williamson, headteacher at Nonsuch, said the award had “created a real buzz around school.” She added: “For me as head, this award feels like meaningful validation of the long hours, dedication and unwavering commitment of my staff. The whole school community is delighted to have received this award as recognition of the hard work, of not only our students but our staff and our families.”
South Farnham’s acting headteacher, William Wallace, described the recognition as “beyond words.” He emphasised the significant effort involved in preparing pupils for life, saying: “The amount of time and effort that goes in to help prepare these children for life, it’s great to get that recognition.”
With more than 800 pupils, South Farnham benefits from a staff-to-teacher ratio of one to 13, ensuring each child receives “bespoke” support. Mr Wallace highlighted the school’s approach to curriculum design, noting that “every subject is championed” and that, “at some point in the school day, every child gets to enjoy the subject where they really excel.”
Nonsuch High School, a selective institution located on the Surrey border and named after a 16th Century palace, has just under 1,500 pupils and a “thriving” sixth form. Mrs Williamson explained that when students feel supported both academically and pastorally, they are able to thrive and achieve more: “When a student feels supported both academically and pastorally, they’re able to thrive and ultimately achieve far more.”
Both schools attribute their success to the dedication of staff and the strong engagement of the wider school community. By maintaining high standards and a focus on individual student development, the schools have achieved recognition that reflects consistent effort and commitment across teaching, pastoral care, and extracurricular opportunities.
The accolades for Nonsuch High School and South Farnham School demonstrate the value of investing in teaching quality and student support, particularly in environments where careful attention is given to each pupil’s strengths and interests.
