North West households have recorded England’s lowest average spending on takeaway meals eaten at home, at the equivalent of just £198 a year, new figures have revealed.
The region shared the bottom spot with the South East, where households spent exactly the same amount.
Office for National Statistics figures analysed by kitchen specialists Prestige showed that North West households spent an average of £3.80 a week, equivalent to around £198 over 52 weeks.
But neighbouring Yorkshire and the Humber told a very different story.
Households there spent the equivalent of £260 a year, approximately £62 more than the North West.
Even the North East recorded a higher figure at £218 annually.
At the other end of the table, London topped England’s rankings at £322 a year, around £125 more than the North West.
The England average was approximately £229 a year, meaning households in the North West spent around 14% less than the national figure.

Olivia Disley, from Prestige, said, “It’s easy to see why takeaways appeal when you’ve had a long day, especially if you’re getting home late and don’t fancy spending another hour preparing dinner.
“But those convenient meals can become a regular expense without you really noticing, particularly if ordering food becomes part of your weekly routine.
“You don’t need a huge kitchen or fancy equipment to cook more at home. Even making the most of a small preparation space can make a difference.”
Olivia recommended keeping the worktop free of clutter, choosing recipes that require minimal preparation and using freezer space for extra portions.
She added, “In smaller kitchens, every bit of usable worktop space matters.
“A well-organised kitchen can make whipping up a quick meal far less stressful, which may help make cooking feel like the easier choice.”
