Gasometer announces its opening performances, launching the new venue as an international cultural destination for live music and arts.
Today, Gasometer reveals that composer Jacob Mühlrad and artist and creative director Alexander Wessely, renowned for their work with leading orchestras, institutions and international artists, will create and direct its opening performances.
Mühlrad has been commissioned by the BBC Proms and Radio France and wrote the music for the 2025 Nobel Prize Banquet. His music has been performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Stockholm Concert Hall, with recordings on Deutsche Grammophon and Warner Classics. Outside classical music, Mühlrad has collaborated with artists such as Swedish House Mafia and 070 Shake.
Wessely is one of the world’s most sought after designers, creating visual worlds for artists including The Weeknd, Rihanna, FKA twigs and Arca, with work spanning Coachella, Madison Square Garden, Sphere in Las Vegas and the 2025 Nobel Prize Banquet.
A venue like no other, Gasometer brings together architecture, live entertainment and the latest visual and audio technology. Opening on 17 March 2027, the new venue is being built inside the historic 1899 gasholder designed by Swedish architect Ferdinand Boberg. From industrial landmark to entertainment powerhouse, Gasometer further enhances Sweden’s reputation as an international cultural force.
The opening programme runs across four consecutive nights and is built around four acts. Mühlrad and Wessely are working at the intersection of classical and contemporary music and visual art. The programme is new, created for Gasometer’s opening, and the staging is made for this room.
“To me, the music relates to the idea of resurrection, and these performances tell the story of how Gasometer is coming back to life,” says Jacob Mühlrad.
“We are exploring what it means to work with the whole interior rather than a fixed stage; how the audience’s eye can move through the room; and why the visual concept could only be made for Gasometer,” says Alexander Wessely.
“With the inauguration of the Gasometer, we are not simply opening a new venue; we are establishing a new benchmark for live entertainment in Europe,” says Julien Planté, Head of Entertainment at Miramis, “In bringing Jacob Mühlrad and Alexander Wessely together, we are signalling our intent from day one: this is a space where architectural heritage meets boundary-pushing artistic innovation. We are proud to offer a stage where world-class creators can realise their most ambitious visions.”
Gasometer is taking shape inside the historic gasholder in Stockholm’s Gasworks district. The brick shell is being preserved. Inside it, a new pillar-free theatre for up to 2,300 guests is under construction for concerts, opera, performing arts and large-scale live productions.
The inauguration runs from 17–20 March 2027. Tickets will be released later this year, with further programme details announced ahead of the opening. Guests can now join the waitlist at gasometer.se to receive more information ahead of the ticket release.
